No, because what was then the SciFi channel had exclusive rights to the series in the US (for their sub-par television version), so Disney couldn't dub or release the Ghibli version until SciFi's arrangement ran out. (Granted, the Ghibli version isn't supposed to be that great either, but I'd imagine the SciFi/SyFy version isn't hard to beat out in terms of quality.)
